Ballia, Uttar Pradesh:
Amid massive outrage over the alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old woman from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, who died Tuesday in Delhi, a BJP deputy from Ballia of the UP said: “He is from duty of all mothers and fathers to imbibe good values in their daughters and raise them in cultivated environments. “
“I am a teacher in addition to being an MP. Such incidents (like rape) can only be stopped with sanskar (culture), not with shasan (good governance) or talwar (referring to sword or might), ”BJP’s Surendra Singh said on Saturday.
“This is my dharma, the drama of the government but the dharma of the family too … While the government is determined to protect, the family must also commit to imbibing good values in their children. Sanskar and sarkaar can make India beautiful, there is no other alternative, ”he says in a video. He was responding to a question from a reporter, who asked him, “Why do you think the rape cases continue when people say it’s Ram Rajya?” ”
The BJP MP is known to have made controversial comments in the past. Last year he said that Nathuram Godse, who killed Mahatama Gandhi “was not a terrorist” and that he “made a mistake”. Earlier this year, he commented on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying she was a “woman of a cruel heart”.
His comments come as opposition leaders continue to attack Yogi Adityanath’s government over the handling of the case. Former Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday met the family of the victim in Hathras, two days after being arrested by UP police on their way to the village.
“No force can silence us,” Gandhi told media after the meeting, promising to keep the pressure on the government until the family gets justice. “Wherever something goes wrong, we will be there to ensure that justice is served. No one can stop us, ”Priyanka Gandhi said.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath handed the case over to the Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday, hours after two senior officials – DGP HC Awasthy and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi – visited the family.
Amid massive criticism of the state government, this was the first visit by senior government and police officials since the alleged gang rape on September 14.
