New Delhi:

The Bihar BJP on Wednesday filed a complaint against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with the Election Commission, accusing him of violating the model code of conduct by “asking for votes” in a tweet on an election day.

The head of the state’s BJP legal cell, SD Sanjay, drew up the written complaint to Bihar’s chief electoral officer asking for “legal action” against Mr Gandhi, who spoke at a few rallies in the state earlier today.

According to the complaint, Mr Gandhi had “posted a statement on Twitter asking for votes today. The time to appeal for the first phase of the polls was more than 28 hours earlier.”

According to Mr. Sanjay, who is a former supplementary solicitor general of India, such an appeal made on election day was “in total violation of the model code of conduct, justifying action against him”.

Voting took place for 71 constituencies of the 243 Assembly members in the first of the three-phase elections on Wednesday.

The complainant also attached printouts of Mr. Gandhi’s three-line tweet, in Hindi, which read: “This time for justice, jobs, farmers and workers, may your votes be for the Grand Alliance. Better. wishes everyone for the first phase of the polls in Bihar. “
