Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday called on disaster management department officials and district magistrates to remain vigilant in the face of possible flooding due to heavy rains in Nepal’s watersheds and the Gandak River .

The flood situation may arise due to heavy rains in the districts of Champaran West, Champaran East, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali and Saran, according to an official statement.

He noted that the water level and flow of the Gandak River is expected to increase due to the heavy rains in the watersheds of Nepal and the Gandak River. The Chief Minister tasked officials of the Disaster Management Department and relevant District Magistrates (DMs) to ensure the evacuation of people living in the low-lying areas of the Gandak River flow, to higher and higher places. safe, according to the press release.

He also ordered officials to remain ready to conduct rescue and relief operations, he said while asking them to assist the evacuees. All arrangements should be made for them in accordance with standard operating procedure (SOP), he said, while noting that separate rescue centers should be set up for people evacuated from any containment area.

These people should be separated from the general population affected by the floods, he added.

He also called on officials to ensure that people must maintain their social distance and wear masks in rescue centers.

An adequate amount of fodder arrangement must be made for livestock in areas from which people are being evacuated, the CM said.

The NDRF and SDRF teams, which have been deployed to various districts, should be kept on alert mode so that they can act quickly in the event of an adverse situation, Kumar said, adding that engineers from the water resources should also remain prepared in order to protect the embankments.

Meanwhile, the water resources department said in a bulletin that all of its landfills are safe. The bulletin, however, did not mention the loss of life and livestock due to the floods.

The Ganga river flows under the danger mark at all places including two places in Patna namely Gandhi Ghat and Digha from where the water resources department is collecting the report.

However, the Baghmati River flows above the danger line in Dhenga, Sonakhan, Dubbadhar, Kataunjha in Sitamarhi district, Beinbad in Muzaffarpur and Hayaghat in Darbhanga district, the bulletin said.

The Kamlabalan River flows above the red mark at two locations of the Jainagar Railway Bridge and Jhanjharpur in Madhubani, while Burhi Gandak is above the danger mark at the Rosera Railway Bridge in Samastipur District.

The Mahananda River flows above the Danger Level at two locations from Taiyabpur in Kishanganj and Dhangaraghat to Purnea, while the Khiroi River flows above the Danger Level at Kamtaul and Ekmighat in Darbhanga District, a-t- he declares.
