The US state of Georgia announced on Friday that it would recount the votes.

Washington, United States:

The US state of Georgia said on Friday it would recount the votes in an election in which Joe Biden took a very fine lead over President Donald Trump.

“With such a small margin, there will be a recount in Georgia,” Georgian Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told reporters in Atlanta.

Raffensperger, the top elected official responsible for overseeing the elections, said the state’s presidential race “remains too close to be called.”

The near-full results on Friday morning showed Biden leading with just over 1,500 votes in Georgia, where changing demographics and high participation by African Americans brought into play a southern state once seen as supporting de reliably Trump’s Republicans.

Georgia is equally critical as it is the only state to hold elections for its two Senate seats this year, which means it will determine which party is in charge.

In the Georgian system, Senate races go to a second round if no candidate receives 50 percent in the first round.

“The final tally in Georgia at this point has huge implications for the whole country,” Raffensperger said.

“The stakes are high and emotions are high on all sides. We will not let these debates distract us from our work. We will do it and we will defend the integrity of our elections.”

He said Georgia was letting observers from both campaigns watch the tally after Trump, without any evidence, alleged widespread fraud across the country.
