New Delhi / Washington DC:
A statue of Mahatma Gandhi in front of the Indian Embassy in Washington DC has been vandalized amid ongoing protests in the United States. The incident was said to have taken place on the night of June 2 and 3, reported the PTI news agency.
The Indian Embassy has informed the United States Department of State and filed a complaint with local law enforcement authorities, which are currently investigating the incident, PTI reported.
“I am truly sorry to see the desecration of the Gandhi statue in Wash, DC. Please accept our sincere apologies. Also dismayed at the horrific death of George Floyd and the horrific violence and vandalism. We are against prejudice and discrimination of all kinds. We are going to recover and be better, “tweeted US Ambassador to India Kenneth Juster.

The statue was covered after being vandalized.
The statue of Mahatma Gandhi was dedicated by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in the presence of former US President Bill Clinton on September 16, 2000 during his state visit to the United States, PTI reported.
The United States has witnessed mass protests against the murder of George Floyd, a black man who suffocated under the knee of a white policeman on May 25 and whose horrific death was filmed by passers-by.
Several of the demonstrations became violent, which often caused damage to certain prestigious and sacred monuments.
