Mortar bomb explosion inside religious school killed at least nine students, police say (Representation)

Kunduz, Afghanistan:

A mortar bomb attack at a religious school in northern Afghanistan killed at least nine students on Thursday, police said.

“According to the initial investigation, the explosion was caused by a mortar that had somehow been transported inside the madrassa,” police spokesman Khalil Asir told AFP. that many of the dead were under the age of 18.

Six students were injured in the explosion in Ishkamish district, Takhar province.

Provincial governor spokesman Jawad Hejri confirmed the incident and the toll.

It comes after two deadly explosions this month targeting separate mosques in Kabul.

On Friday, four people were killed when explosives exploded in a mosque in the capital during weekly prayers.

A week earlier, an explosion in a mosque in the heavily fortified green zone killed two people, including a prominent imam.

The latest bloodshed comes as the Taliban and the government prepare to launch delayed peace talks to end the nearly two-decade-old conflict in the impoverished country.
