Actor Abhay Deol hailed as a hero on Twitter after an Instagram post in which he called “awake Indian celebrities” for speaking out against racism in the United States but raise your voice against injustice and oppression at home. Tuesday was, literally, a dark day for social media, where many black screens were shared in solidarity with the race-related protests that are currently crossing the United States. Many Indian users have also displayed black screens and, while there is no argument against joining the choir of protests against police brutality, Abhay Deol’s criticism of celebrities – it also includes the Indian middle class – is based on their reluctance to comment on problems at home.
On Wednesday, a day after #BlackOutTuesday, Abhay Deol shared a page written with the hashtags #migrantlivesmatter, #minoritylivesmatter, #poorlivesmatter; in the legend, he urged celebrities and the middle class to take a stand against racism in the United States to “see how it manifests in their own backyard” and to “speak out against systemic problems in your own country”.
