Imphal:

A baby boy born to a couple placed in institutional quarantine in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur after returning from Goa has been named Emmanuel Quarantino, officials said on Tuesday.

Quarantino is the first baby born in a quarantine center in the northeast of the country, they added.

“As they are in quarantine and the name of the isolation center is Emmanuel School, they named baby Emmanuel Quarantino,” said an official.

When the couple arrived in Manipur on May 27 on a special train from Goa, the woman was in an advanced stage of pregnancy. After their arrival, they were detained in a room at Emmanuel school, which had been turned into a quarantine center, said the official.

“The woman delivered the baby without complications on Sunday. The mother and baby are fine,” said Dr. Paotinlal Haokip, chief medical director of the Kangpokpi District Hospital.

District chief medical officer Dr. Nilakanta Singh said they were brought from Kangpokpi City to the Haipi Village Quarantine Center to supervise the delivery.

The baby, weighing 3.2 kg, was delivered by two other doctors, including a gynecologist, who were replaced by the authorities of the quarantine center, said the official.
