A herd of elephants trampled an 8-year-old girl to death and destroyed the standing crop in the village of Nemna in the Bijpur region of Uttar Pradesh, an official said on Monday.

A herd of elephants from the jungles of Chhattisgarh lost their way to the Jarha forest area on Sunday evening and attacked a house, stomping to death Naina, 8, said Division Forestry Officer Mohd Zaheer Mirza.

The elephants later destroyed the standing crop of more than 10 farmers, he said. The village chief, Sitaram, demanded compensation for the girl’s family and the farmers who suffered losses.
