At least seven deaths on special migrant trains were reported on Wednesday, officials said, putting the railways in the dock over its handling of these non-AC trains.

The seven deaths – four trains on board going to Bihar and three ending in Uttar Pradesh – occurred in the past few days and were reported on Wednesday.
The death of 35-year-old Uresh Khatoon shook the conscience of the nation and let the Railways scramble for an explanation. Her toddler’s futile attempt to wake her from eternal sleep on a Muzaffarpur platform in Bihar was captured in a moving video that went viral on social media on Wednesday, opening the doors of criticism for the paths iron.
The Railways attributed his death to a recent heart operation, also supported by his son.
Another death reported in Muzaffarpur was that of the four and a half year old son of a Delhi based Bihar migrant. The boy died at the station here when he arrived on a “ special Shramik ” train, while his father was desperately looking for milk which he said would have saved his child.
While his father said he died of heat, Deputy Railway Police Superintendent Ramakant Upadhyay said the boy had been in pain for some time and died before the train reached the station from Muzaffarpur.
In Danapur State, the body of Basisth Mahato, a 70-year-old heart patient, was removed from the Mumbai-Darbhanga Shramik special train. Mahto returned with his family after treatment in Mumbai and died between Maihar and Satna, the Railways said.
In addition, a 58-year-old migrant worker died on the Surat-Hajipur Shramik special train on Tuesday evening, said police director Devendra Nath.
He was identified as Bhushan Singh from Saran district in Bihar. The body was sent post-mortem.
In Uttar Pradesh, a train of migrants from Mumbai reached Manduadih, Varanasi, on Wednesday with two dead passengers – Dashrath Prajapati (30), physically disabled, and Ram Ratan Gaud, 63.
The Railways said that while Prajapati suffered from kidney disease, Gaud suffered “many ailments”.
The body of Sheikh Salim, 45, a resident of Bahraich (UP), was found on the special train Shramik Vapi-Deen Dayal Upadhayay Junction when it arrived at Sagar station.
The railways said the body was kept at the district hospital for autopsy and for coronavirus testing.
Migrant workers on the move complained about the lack of food and water on these special trains and also alleged that they did not run on time and were hijacked “at will”.
The Railways argued, however, that these trains were operating on “preprogrammed streamlined routes”.
Some trains, which may have taken 24 hours to reach their destination, arrived in more than two days, reports said, leaving passengers on board hungry and desperate.
“A few deaths have been reported on the Shramik special trains. In most of these cases it is discovered that the dead are old and chronically ill, who had actually gone to the big cities for medical treatment and did not could return only after the railways launched these special Shramik trains, “said a railway spokesman.
He also reported that 7,811,575 meals and 11,07,7,830 bottles of water were provided to migrant workers on these trains until May 26.
However, many passengers tweeted that they would starve on board due to the longer than expected operating life of these trains.
The railways have also said that the state of origin must provide food and water to migrant workers before the trip begins, but in many places they only receive 200 ml.
To solve this problem, the Railways, by an ordinance of May 22, authorized the general managers of each zone to spend up to Rs 1 lakh in each Shramik Special train to organize the meals of the workers.
The Railways have also instructed the areas to ensure that train meals are never skipped.
If it should be ignored due to operational requirements, officials were asked to make sure of other arrangements beforehand. “Find innovative solutions to problems”.
A senior official told PTI that because of social distancing standards, food and water are placed at the door of coaches, they are not distributed by anyone on board and workers are expected to share them among themselves.
In the event of a complaint, meals are again provided at the next station where they are available.
Officials said the arrangement could have failed because migrant workers are hungry or have been without food for days.
