Investments of nearly Rs 1,000 crore in the National Monsoon Mission and High Performance Computing program of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) over the past five years have generated economic benefits worth Rs 50,000 crore for farmers, ranchers and fishermen. shown.

The study conducted by the National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER) was based on a face-to-face survey of 6,098 respondents – 3,965 farmers, 757 marine fishermen and 1,376 livestock owners.

Responses from over 2 lakh farmers were also collected via an interactive voice response system.

“The report provides an estimated income gain of nearly Rs 13,000 crore per year for farmers and ranchers and an additional benefit of almost Rs 48,000 crore,” the ministry said.

The report was launched by Minister of Earth Sciences Harsh Vardhan at an event in Delhi on Tuesday.

A total of Rs 551 crore was spent on the national monsoon mission while Rs 990 crore was committed on the high performance computing program for better weather forecasting.

For every rupee invested in the national monsoon mission and high performance computing facilities of the ministry, the country has obtained benefits worth 50 rupees, which translates into gains of 50, he said. he declares.

“Adding the economic gain accruing to farming households and fishing households, the present value of the benefits accruing to BPL households in the rainfed areas is equivalent to Rs 50,447 crore.

“The current level of investment is much lower than the benefits achievable over the five-year period,” the report says.

Speaking at the event, Mr Vardhan said the information through these projects has helped farmers on different levels – to ensure early or delayed planting, to change the irrigation schedule, to vaccinate animals and better forage management for them.
