World leaders wished Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump a speedy recovery after the US president announced they both tested positive for the coronavirus, a month before the US election. Mr Trump, 74, has been described by his doctor as feeling ‘fine’ and able to perform his duties while under quarantine in the White House.

“Tonight @FLOTUS and I have tested positive for COVID-19. We will immediately begin our quarantine and recovery process. We will get through this TOGETHER!
The US president tested positive for the highly contagious virus became the main topic of discussion on social media as thousands wished him a speedy recovery.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who had also tested positive for the virus this year, wished the US President and the First Lady a speedy recovery. “My best wishes to President Trump and the First Lady. I hope they recover from the coronavirus quickly,” Mr Johnson tweeted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Mr. Trump and Melania Trump a speedy recovery. “I wish my friend @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and @FLOTUS a speedy recovery and good health,” PM Modi tweeted.

News of Mr Trump and the first lady testing positive came just after one of his closest advisers, Hope Hicks, was reported to have caught the virus on Thursday. Ms Hicks traveled with Mr Trump to Cleveland for her first debate with Joe Biden earlier this week. She was with him again for a campaign rally in Minnesota on Wednesday.
“I send my best wishes to Donald and Melania Trump,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokeswoman tweeted on her behalf.
The head of the WHO (World Health Organization), Tedros Adhanom, wished the American president “a full and rapid recovery”.
Russia wishes Mr. Trump a “speedy recovery,” the Kremlin spokesman said. “Of course, we wish President Trump a quick and easy recovery,” President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted: “Like millions of Israelis, Sara and I think of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump and wish our friends a full and speedy recovery.”

Others who sent greetings to the couple included European Union leader Charles Michel and Polish President Andrzej Duda.
US Vice President Mike Pence said millions of people across America are praying for the full and speedy recovery of the president and his wife.
