Jal Shakti’s ministry has launched a 100-day campaign to secure clean water supplies.

New Delhi:

Jal Shakti’s ministry on Friday launched a 100-day campaign to ensure the supply of safe drinking water to all schools and Anganwadi centers across the country.

Union Minister Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, called on the states and territories of the Union to make it a “Jan Andolan” (popular movement). He said he wrote to chief ministers and lieutenant governors asking them to lead the campaign in their respective regions.

Speaking at the launch of the event, the minister said the initiative would be a fitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his 151st birthday on Friday.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the launch of the logo of the ‘Mission Jal Jeevan’ (JJM) on September 29, called for ensuring the supply of drinking water to all schools and Anganwadi centers in the country.

“In this context, we are launching a 100-day campaign to guarantee the same. We call on all state governments to ensure the supply of safe drinking water to all schools and anganwadi centers within the next 100 days,” Mr. Shekhawat said.

The “ Jal Jeevan Ghar Jal Mission ” aims to provide tap water to households with a special focus on women and children by 2024.

Ensuring safe water for children is a priority under JJM as they are most susceptible to water-borne illnesses such as typhoid, dysentery, diarrhea and cholera.

The situation is much more complex in areas where water sources are contaminated with arsenic, fluoride and other heavy metals, and prolonged consumption of water containing these contaminants can lead to degenerative diseases such as arsenicosis, fluorosis, among others, causing serious health problems. , he said.

To deal with these serious problems, measures have been taken by the ministry to ensure safe water through connection to tap water in schools, anganwadi centers and health centers, he said.
