Dubai:
The new coronavirus pandemic continues to accelerate, and its effects will be felt for decades, the Director General of the World Health Organization said Monday in an online conference.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a virtual health forum hosted by Dubai authorities that the biggest threat to the world is not the virus itself, but “the lack of global solidarity and leadership global “.
“We cannot overcome this pandemic with a divided world,” he said.
“The politicization of the pandemic has exacerbated it. None of us is safe until we are all safe.”
The WHO warned last week against another dangerous phase of the coronavirus pandemic, people are tired of blockages despite the rapid spread of the disease.
COVID-19, which has killed more than 4.65,000 people and infected nearly nine million people worldwide, is spreading in the Americas and parts of Asia, even as Europe begins to ease restrictive measures.
Bans to stop the spread of the virus have caused crippling economic damage, but WHO says the pandemic remains a major threat.
“The pandemic continues to accelerate,” Tedros said during the virtual conference.
“We know that the pandemic is much more than a health crisis, it is an economic crisis, a social crisis and in many countries a political crisis,” he said.
“Its effects will be felt for decades.”
A vaccine remains at best in months despite several trials, while scientists discover even more about the virus, its symptoms and the extent to which it has spread before being identified.
