This is long overdue and very long overdue! The first time I met AK, he asked me to come to his home in Versova. Before he could say anything, he said, “My parents live with me. The truth, I learned later, was COMPLETELY the opposite. It was a typical chaotic Indian household. Parents looking for a newspaper, the doorbell constantly ringing, Shrilalji furiously cooking for the growing number of guests, a strutting cat and AK looking for a single quiet corner in his own house. From the time he offered me Choked (sitting next to me at MAMI) until the date of his release, it took three years. That’s when I really got to know the man. He became a friend, a mentor and a sounding board. With him, you know you get the whole truth. When he likes your work, he jumps, dances, cries and expresses his joy; if he doesn’t, he just says it. Man has no filters. This may be both its advantage and its scourge. He likes his whiskey; that I continue to harass him to reduce (instead of increasing his exercise!). He has a childlike innocence and an open heart that are rarely seen these days. He is so busy playing the aunt in agony in the lives of others that he may be forgetting his own. It’s AK for you. In Strangled, Saiyami Kher plays Sarita Pillai, a middle-class wife and mother who are struggling to make ends meet as the primary breadwinner of her family. Her life changes when she finds bundles of bills clogging her kitchen sink – that changes again with the 2016 ban on notes. Choked has received rave reviews; GalacticGaming’s Saibal Chatterjee gave it 4 stars.
