New Delhi:
Bhai Dooj, Bhaubeej, Bhai Tika, Bhai Phonta is a festival celebrated on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha (brilliant fortnight) in the Hindu calendar Vikram Samvat or the calendar month Shalivahan Shaka of Kartika. It is celebrated during the Diwali or Tihar festival and the Holi festival. The celebrations on this day are similar to the Raksha Bandhan festival. On this day, the older brothers give gifts to their younger sisters.
On the day of the festival, the sisters invite their brothers over for a sumptuous meal often including their favorite dishes / sweets.
The whole ceremony signifies a brother’s duty to protect his sister, as well as a sister’s blessings for her brother.
Continuing the ceremony in a traditional style, the sisters perform arti for their brother and apply a red tika to the brother’s forehead. This tika ceremony on the occasion of Bhai dooj signifies the sister’s most sincere prayers for the long and happy life of her brother and giving them gifts. In return, the older brothers bless their sisters and can also treat them with gifts or money.
