New Delhi:
Rahul Gandhi of Congress, whose “Surender Modi” searches the Prime Minister yesterday at the head of Twitter trends, today had a difficult question: why does China praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the middle of the confrontation in Ladakh. Prime Minister Modi’s all-party meeting on Friday where he said China had neither captured Indian territory nor crossed the border, Gandhi threw repeated blows at the Prime Minister, accusing him of giving in Indian territory to the Chinese.
Gandhi today published a report on the praises of the Chinese spokesman Global Times for the Prime Minister following his comments at Friday’s multi-stakeholder meeting. The accompanying tweet said, “China killed our soldiers. China took our land. So why did China praise Modi during this conflict?”

In a report entitled “India knows it cannot wage war on China”, published yesterday, the Global Times quoted experts as saying that PM Modi “was playing with words to avoid a climbing”. “China’s capacity, not only in military terms, but also in terms of global and international influence, is greater than that of India,” said the report.
In addition, “Prime Minister Modi’s assertion that Indian forces can take all necessary measures is a show of force for the national public to appease the Indian masses and boost the morale of Indian troops,” said the report.
Gandhi has repeatedly targeted the Prime Minister on the June 15 violence in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh – the worst confrontation since 1967, in which 20 Indian soldiers died and 76 were injured in a clash with Chinese troops.
His tweets became sharper after Friday’s multi-stakeholder meeting, where Prime Minister Modi said: “No one on our territory or any of our posts is captured.”
“Although we have given our armed forces carte blanche, we have also made our diplomatic position known to China. India wants peace and friendship, but protecting its sovereignty is paramount,” said the Prime Minister.
The next day, Gandhi suggested that Prime Minister Modi cede Indian territory to China. Yesterday, when he published an article in a foreign publication, he tweeted: “Narendra Modi is actually Surender Modi”.
It angered BJP leaders, one of whom, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said that “surrender is the hallmark of the Gandhi-Nehru family”.
“In 1962 Assam was almost given by Pt Nehru. When the Chinese army captured Bomdila, Nehru said,” My heart goes to the people of Assam. “Shame,” he reads in his tweet.
The Prime Minister’s Office said it was an attempt to give a “malicious interpretation” to Prime Minister Modi’s comments.
