Akhilesh Yadav said one of the girls tested at Kanpur shelter suffered from AIDS

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Monday demanded an investigation into the alleged physical exploitation of girls in a state-run shelter, one day after 57 detainees, including five pregnant, tested positive for COVID-19 .

Mr. Yadav also said that one of the girls tested at the Kanpur shelter suffered from AIDS.

Kanpur district administration said on Sunday that the girls were pregnant when they came to the shelter.

News from the Kanpur government child welfare center has sparked outrage in Uttar Pradesh. Some girls are pregnant. Fifty-seven suffer from coronavirus and one from AIDS. They should be treated immediately,” said Mr. Yadav in a Hindi tweet.

“The government should immediately launch an investigation against those involved in the physical exploitation,” he added.

Fifty-seven girls, including five pregnant, at the Kanpur district home, tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday, an official said.

“The five pregnant girls, who were found positive for COVID-19, were referred by the child protection committees of Agra, Etah, Kannauj, Firozabad and Kanpur under the POCSO law. Two other pregnant girls were tested negative at COVID-19. The seven girls were pregnant when they came to the shelter, “Kanpur DM Brahma Dev Ram Tiwari told reporters.
