Bihar Assembly Elections 2020: The counting of votes will take place on November 10. (Representation)

New Delhi:

More than two million voters in Bihar will decide the fate of 1,066 candidates today across 71 segments of the assembly in the first phase of elections.

Guidelines have been issued by the Electoral Commission for the safe conduct of the electoral exercise, which is taking place amid the raging COVID-19 pandemic.

These include the lowering of the ceiling for the maximum number of voters for a voting booth from 1,600 to 1,000, the staggering of polling hours and the possibility of voting by post for people over 80 years of age or those affected or suspected of carrying the contagion.

This election will see Nitish Kumar and his BJP-backed JDU fight for a fifth consecutive term. The challenge will be a mahagathbandan led by Tejashwi Yadav and the RJD Congress. Chirag Paswan’s LJP, a BJP ally at the center, is in the mix as an independent party – which has led to speculation of a tacit deal with the BJP.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JDU will contest 35 seats in the first phase. The BJP fielded candidates in 29, with seven seats going to smaller allies. The RJD will fight 42 seats and Congress 20. Mr. Paswan’s LJP will fight only 41 seats, but these include the 35 contested by the JDU. In the 2015 elections, the RJD won 27 of the 71 seats that were polled in the first phase. JDU won 18, BJP 13, and Congress only nine.

The second and third phase of state elections will be held on November 3-7. The counting of the votes will take place on November 10.

Bihar elections 2020: the fate of 6 ministers and the former chief minister will be sealed in phase 1 of the Bihar poll

More than 2 million people in Bihar will vote today to elect their representatives for 71 of the 243 constituencies in the State Assembly. Janata Dal United, under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is running at 35 seats, while his ally BJP is at 29. Chirag Paswan’s LJP, who has become Mr Kumar’s biggest rival in recent months, presented candidates in the 35 seats contested by the JDU.

Tejashwi Yadav’s RJD is running at 42 seats, while Congress as an ally tries its luck in 20 constituencies. Strict anti-Covid measures have been put in place by the electoral commission to prevent transmission of the virus during voting. The fate of several high-level candidates, including six ministers and a former chief minister, will be decided in the first phase of the ballot.
