New Delhi:

Chief Congressman Veerappa Moily, one of the most senior members of the “Group of 23” who called for sweeping reforms in Congress, said today he was “admitted “that the organization is not in a position to advance” the philosophy of Congress and protect democracy. ” He also said that Sonia Gandhi’s leadership was still needed.

The former Union minister further said that the intention of the letter was to keep the party ready for the 2024 elections in Lok Sabha, as well as the elections to the country’s assembly and local bodies.

“It is an accepted fact that the congressional party organization is unable to advance the philosophy of Congress and protect democracy in the current turbulent situation prevailing in the country,” Moily said. in a press release.

Stating that the Gandhi family are still known for their patriotism and sacrifice, Mr Moily said Sonia Gandhi’s leadership was still needed and that her consent to continue as party chair is “the most welcome step” .

The statement came a day after the tragedy of the congressional working committee meeting where many leaders, including former party leader Rahul Gandhi, lashed out at those who sent the letter.

“At any time of crisis, both at the national and state levels, I have always supported the national leadership of the Congress party to preserve the unity and integrity of the party,” Moily said, stressing that he’s been in Congress ever since. the last 50 years having joined under the leadership of Indira Gandhi.

“Even during my tenure as Chairman of the Standing Committee on Finance, I criticized the performance of the NDA government. My loyalty to the Congress Party is still unwavering and will continue to be present for the rest of my life, ”the former Karnataka chief minister told me.

Noting that Congress is one of the country’s two major national parties, Mr. Moily alleged that the NDA government at the Center has become a threat to the basic principles of democracy – secularism, equality and inclusiveness.

Congress should always be combat-ready to combat the BJP’s divisive politics, he said.

“Since I am one of the signatories of the letter to the president of the Congress, the intention is absolutely to keep the party ready for the Lok Sabha of 2024, the elections for the assembly and local bodies which are being held in the country, ”Mr. Moily said.

The CWC urged Sonia Gandhi to continue as interim leader until an AICC session can be called and authorized her to make the organizational changes necessary to address the challenges facing the party. .

After the seven-hour meeting of the party’s highest decision-making body, the CWC made it clear that no one would be allowed to undermine or weaken the party and its leaders.

The CWC has also resolved that internal party issues cannot be discussed in the media or in public forums and that all such issues must be raised within the party “in the interest of convenience and discipline”.

Meanwhile, some other members of the “Group of 23” also said today that they were “not dissidents” but “supporters of renewal” of the party.
