The Uttar Pradesh government suspended Kanpur Police Chief Anant Dev after an investigation by a special investigative team found a link between the police and gangster Vikas Dubey, responsible for the death of eight policemen.
“Anant Dev has been suspended. Action has been taken based on the SIT report,” said Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Kumar Awasthi.
Anant Dev holds the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the police.
Eight police officers were ambushed in the village of Bikru in the Chaubeypur area of Kanpur as they traveled there to arrest Vikas Dubey shortly after midnight on July 3. They were mown down by bullets fired from rooftops.
Vikas Dubey was shot dead by police on July 10 while trying to escape from custody.
A three-member SIT to investigate the police ambush highlighted a link between the police and the gangster, officials said. He recommended action against police personnel and administration officials.
