The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Monday that federal protections against workplace discrimination also apply to sexual orientation, contrary to the position taken by the administration of President Donald Trump.

The landmark decision said that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination against employees on the basis of a person’s gender, also covers sexual orientation and transgender status.

“Today we have to decide if someone can be fired just because they are gay or transgender,” the court said. “The answer is clear.”

Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights activists, as well as democratic politicians and several large corporations had asked the court to state that the community was protected by law.
