Washington:

The United States confirmed 59,222 new cases of coronavirus on Monday in the past 24 hours, Johns Hopkins University said in its real-time count.

This brought the total number of cases in the United States, the country hardest hit by the global pandemic, to more than 3.36 million, the University of Baltimore said at 8:30 p.m. (00:30 GMT Tuesday).

An additional 411 deaths were reported, bringing the total to 135,582.

The country has seen a resurgence of cases in the so-called Sun Belt, which stretches from southern Florida to California.

This upturn has prompted some states to reconsider loosening their anti-virus restrictions – or to reinstate more stringent measures.

California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday ordered the closure of restaurants, bars, cinemas, hair salons and indoor places of worship to stem the spread.
