Washington:

President Donald Trump released a decree Thursday to deprive social media giants like Twitter of legal immunity for the content they publish.

If adopted, Twitter and Facebook would become open to lawsuits and considerably increased government regulation.

Trump – upset this week by Twitter tagging one of his tweets for the first time with a fact-checking notice – said regulation is necessary because companies are no longer neutral forums but engage in “political activism”.
