New Delhi:
India raised with the United States on Tuesday its decision to withdraw US visas from foreign students if their universities opt for online courses only, official sources said.
The issue was raised by Foreign Minister Harsh Vardhan Shringla during an online meeting with the United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, David Hale.
The sources said the US side took note and said it would keep the best interests of Indian students in mind and that it would try to mitigate the impact of the decision.
He also informed India that detailed guidelines for the implementation of the decision had not yet been published.
In a move that will have a negative impact on hundreds of thousands of Indian students, the American immigration authority has announced that foreign students will have to leave the country or risk being expelled if their universities switch to courses in online only during this fall semester due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The US immigration agency said that students currently in the United States and enrolled in such programs “must leave the country or take other measures, such as transfer to an institute with tuition fees in person to stay in a regular situation. “
