Washington:

The United States added 46,321 new cases of coronavirus in 24 hours on Monday, according to a count from Johns Hopkins University.

The world‘s largest economy also added 532 deaths, the Baltimore-based institution’s tracker showed at 8:30 p.m. (00:30 GMT Tuesday).

The United States has now recorded a total of 4,711,323 cases, with 155,366 deaths, making it by far the most affected country in the world.

Monday was the second day to reduce the number of cases, after a five-day streak last week all recorded more than 60,000 new infections daily.

President Donald Trump said during a coronavirus briefing on Monday that the virus would “recede” in parts of the southern and western United States, deeming the situation “very encouraging.”

But the day before, White House coronavirus adviser Deborah Birx warned that the country was entering a “new phase” of the pandemic, with rural areas just as threatened as large cities.

“It’s extremely widespread,” she told CNN on Sunday.

“For anyone who lives in a rural area, you are not immune or protected against this virus.”

More than 18 million people around the world have been infected with COVID-19 since the disease first emerged in China late last year. About 680,000 died.
