Washington:
The United States recorded 57,683 cases of COVID-19 in 24 hours on Friday, according to a count from Johns Hopkins University, the third consecutive day with a record number of new infections.
The Baltimore University tracker showed the total number of cases since the pandemic reached the United States at 2,793,022 at 8:30 p.m. (00:30 GMT Saturday).
The university also recorded 728 additional deaths, bringing the total number of deaths in the United States to 129,405.
The new record number of cases occurred as infections soared in the southern and western states, and the United States – the hardest hit country in the world in the coronavirus pandemic – is heading for the holiday weekend of July 4.
