Washington:
United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Sunday that she would seek to remain as head of the United States House of Representatives if her fellow Democrats retain their majority after the November 3 general election, reinforcing thus his grip on the party as he sought to regain control of the White House and the Senate.
When asked if she plans to run for another term as Speaker of the United States House if her political party maintains control, she told CNN in an interview, “Yes, I am.”
Pelosi, 80, took on the role of House spokesperson again after his Democrats won the lower house of Congress in 2018, two years after Republican President Donald Trump took office. Previously, she served as a speaker from 2007 to 2011.
While a small group of Democrats called for a leadership change to make way for a younger generation of party leaders, Pelosi proved to be a difficult counterweight to Trump and presided over his impeachment even as she had become a political backpack for Republicans. .
U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the more liberal wing of the party that was part of a wave of New Democrats that flooded the House in 2018, had pushed for new leadership before Democrats regrouped around Pelosi.
When asked if she would support the Democratic President of California again, Ocasio-Cortez said she focused on growing the party’s House majority, especially with more progressive Democrats.
“If President Pelosi is the most progressive candidate, then I will support her,” she told CNN in a separate interview.
House Democrats hold a 232-197 majority over Republicans and are looking to secure more seats in next month’s election, which has 43 competitive House races in the United States.
Control of the Republican-led Senate is also at stake in the Nov. 3 contest, and Pelosi on Sunday acknowledged the need for Democrats to take back control of the upper house as well in order to continue their agenda.
“We have to win the Senate,” she told CNN.
Trump, who is seeking re-election, said during last week’s debate against Democratic rival Joe Biden that he believes Republicans could take over the House next month, a prediction that Pelosi rejected.
A Reuters / Ipsos poll shows close races for the Senate and between Trump and Biden in several US states, but nationally, Biden leads Trump by 8 percentage points among likely voters, from 51% to 43%. Weakening support for Trump has also raised concerns over the 53-47 Senate Republicans’ majority with competitive races for 10 seats.
Biden, 77, also convinced a number of young Democrats to get the party’s nomination to challenge Trump, 74.
