Washington:

A former white supremacist convicted of the murder of a family of three in 1996 was put to death by lethal injection on Tuesday during the first federal execution in the United States in 17 years, the Department of Justice said.

Daniel Lewis Lee, 47, was pronounced dead at 8:07 a.m. local time at Terre Haute prison in Indiana, the department said in a statement.

Lee is the first of three federal inmates to be executed this week.

Lee, from the Yukon, Oklahoma, and another man were convicted of the murder of the Arkansas family in a robbery to help finance the founding of an “Aryan People’s Republic”.

Lee declared his innocence in his final statement, according to a reporter for a local newspaper who witnessed the execution.

“You are killing an innocent man,” said Lee according to the Indianapolis Star.

Lee’s execution was scheduled for Monday but was temporarily suspended by a judge who wanted to allow court challenges to the drug that was to be used to kill federal detainees.

However, the Supreme Court lifted the lower court’s order overnight and paved the way for executions.
