Washington:
Twitter said on Monday that it would take the proactive step of alerting its users to possible false information in preparation for unverified allegations about the November 3 U.S. election.
The Short Messaging service said it would place notices at the top of user feeds warning that there could be delays in the full election results and that people could see “misleading information” about the vote by mail.
This “pre-bunking” is part of an effort to stay ahead of baseless claims about the election before they happen, according to Twitter site integrity manager Yoel Roth.
“We are introducing ‘pre-bunks’ for some of the more common misleading claims about # Election2020,” Roth tweeted.
“Research shows that getting ahead of misinformation is a powerful way to build resilience. I am delighted to see this application of inoculation theory in practice.”
The move is the latest in online platforms aimed at stemming a wave of unverified claims during the campaign, including President Donald Trump’s efforts to question the legitimacy of mail-in ballots.
Twitter has previously said it will remove tweets that encourage violence or call on people to interfere with election results or the operation of polling stations.
He also said that candidates for office could not claim an election victory until it was “called with authority” and that premature demands would be tagged with a link to the platform’s election page.
