Washington:

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that there had been “surprise dumps” in states where he led Democrat Joe Biden in the White House race.

“Last night I was ruling, often solidly, in many key states, in almost all cases Democrat-led and controlled,” Trump tweeted. “Then, one by one, they began to magically disappear as the surprise ballots were counted.”

Trump has provided no evidence for his “dumping ground” claim and there have been no reports of irregularities.

The leads in many states have moved back and forth between candidates as the votes are counted.

Trump, who overnight declared himself the winner in Tuesday’s election, spent months denouncing the mail-in ballots, baselessly claiming they were susceptible to fraud.

“How come every time they count postal dumps, they’re so devastating in their percentages and destructive power?” he tweeted on Wednesday.

The use of postal ballots has skyrocketed this election amid the coronavirus pandemic, and the US Elections Project has said a record 65.2 million Americans have voted by mail.
