Accused Zakir Recently Transferred From Prison 5 To Prison 5 (File)

New Delhi:

A prisoner in Tihar prison in Delhi stabbed another detainee to death to avenge his sister’s rape six years ago, police said on Tuesday.

Zakir, 21, stabbed Mohammad Mehtab (27), a resident of Nizamuddin, in Tihar 8/9 prison on Monday.

Mehtab was stabbed repeatedly, including in the stomach and neck, by a sharp metal object by Zakir around 6 am, police said.

Zakir, a resident of Dakshinpuri in Delhi, was recently transferred from prison 5 to prison 8.

The wounds on Mehtab’s neck were deep and he received first aid in the prison clinic. He was then taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where doctors declared him dead when he arrived.

“During the investigation, it was found that Mehtab was accused in the rape of Zakir’s younger sister in 2014. The girl would have died by suicide later,” said Deputy Commissioner Deepak Purohit police station (west).

Zakir was recently transferred to ward number 4 of prison prison number 8. Mehatab was already housed in the same ward on the first floor, police said.

This transfer was made at the request of the accused because he had fought with other inmates in his previous neighborhood. He was looking for an opportunity to take revenge on Mehtab, they said.

When other detainees went out for morning prayer Monday at around 6:00 a.m., the accused went upstairs and stabbed Mehtab with a knife-shaped object, said the deputy police commissioner.

One murder case was recorded at the Hari Nagar police station in Delhi against Zakir.

Mehtab was charged in a rape case at Ambedkar Nagar in 2014 and has been in prison since then. Zakir, accused of murder, has been in prison since 2018.
