Washington:
A gloomy President Donald Trump warned on Tuesday that the coronavirus crisis in the United States was likely to “get worse before it gets better.”
“Some areas of our country are doing very well,” Trump said during his first official White House briefing on the virus since the end of April.
“Others are less well,” said the president. “It will probably get worse unfortunately before it gets better.”
He said there had been “a worrying increase in cases (of the virus) in many parts of our South.”
Trump has urged Americans to wear face masks to help prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus that has killed more than 141,000 in the United States.
“We ask everyone that when you are not able to distance yourself socially, wear a mask,” he said.
“Whether you like the mask or not, they have an impact. They will have an effect and we need whatever we can get.”
Trump said the goal was not just to manage the pandemic, but to end it.
“The vaccines are coming and they are coming much sooner than anyone thought possible,” he said.
Trump also reiterated his claim that the virus “will go away.”
“He will disappear,” he said.
