Joe Biden strongly criticized Republican President Donald Trump’s response to the pandemic.

LOS ANGELES:

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden released a video message on Wednesday marking the grim milestone of 100,000 American lives lost due to the coronavirus pandemic, saying to the bereaved: “The nation is crying with you”.

Biden spoke after several death counts by COVID-19, including one compiled by Reuters, showed that the new coronavirus killed more than 100,000 people in the United States, even as slowing deaths encouraged companies to reopen and that the Americans were coming out of more than two months of lockout.

Biden, speaking from his home in Delaware, relied on the loss of his own family during his remarks. The former wife and granddaughter of the former vice-president were killed in a motor vehicle accident in 1972; Biden’s son Beau died of brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46.

“There are moments in our history so dark, so heartbreaking, that they are forever fixed in each of our hearts as a shared pain. Today is one of those moments,” said Biden. “For those who are suffering, I am truly sorry for your loss.”

He added, “I think I know how you feel. You feel like you’re sucked into a black hole in the middle of your chest. It’s stuffy.”

Biden has been very critical of Republican President Donald Trump’s response to the pandemic. In a jab at Trump, Biden cited a recent study from Columbia University which said that if the federal government had imposed social distancing and foreclosure a week earlier, 36,000 lives would have been saved.

“This is a fateful step that we should not have reached; it could have been avoided,” said Biden. Trump rejected the study, calling the university a “liberal and shameful institution.”
