New Delhi:
Despite being the second most populous country in the world, the daily growth rate of new cases of coronavirus in India continues to decline, from around 31% in March to 3.24% on July 12, announced Tuesday the Ministry of Health.
In a press briefing, Rajesh Bhushan, a special duty officer in the ministry, said: “There has been a gradual decline in the daily growth rate of new cases”.
“If you see, the daily growth rate of COVID-19 cases in March was around 31.28%, it dropped to around 9% in May and fell further to 4.82% in late May. look at it on July 12, it fell to 3.24%, “said Bhushan.
Many times, in a country like India, which has a massive population, the numbers in absolute terms tend to “obscure” the attention of policy makers and people who manage public health problems, according to the official.
“So it’s important not to focus on the absolute numbers and also see the trend in the daily growth rate of cases,” he said. “Here we see that the growth rate of new daily cases is decreasing.”
With 28,498 new cases registered in one day, the Indian COVID-19 count exceeded nine lakh on Tuesday, just three days after crossing the eight lakh mark, according to ministry data.
The total number of coronavirus cases in the country jumped to 9.06,752 and the number of deaths rose to 23,727 with 553 people succumbing to the disease in 24 hours.
According to a PTI count, the total number of cases is 9.31,101, the number of people released is 5.89,015 and the death count is 24,260.
