Election of Rajya Sabha: the MNF sent the former president of the youth wing of the K Vanlalvena party (file)

The candidates of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), the opposition Zoram Popular Movement (ZPM) parties and the Congress on Tuesday presented candidates for the single seat of Rajya Sabha in Mizoram.
The election to the headquarters of Mizoram will take place simultaneously with other states on June 19 and Tuesday was the last date for the submission of nomination papers.
The MNF dispatched the former president of the youth wing of the K Vanlalvena party, while the main opposition, the ZPM, appointed its secretary general (front manager) B Lalchhanzova.
Congress has nominated its spokesperson and chairman of the Lallianchhunga media department as its candidate.
Speaking to reporters after submitting the candidacy, K Vanlalvena said he did not expect to be the party candidate for the Rajya Sabha siege because there are many good leaders who deserve it more than him.
“I am fortunate to have been chosen as the party’s candidate. I am very grateful to the party president and chief minister Zoramthanga and the party leaders for having chosen me,” he said.
The head of the MNF said he would do his best for the state if elected to the upper house of parliament.
B Lalchhanzova said that his party had presented a candidate for the seat of Rajya Sabha as a sign of respect and solidarity with the people, who elected seven members of the ZPM to the 40-member Assembly in the last state elections held in November 2018.
Formerly an electoral alliance of several outfits, the ZPM merged into a single political party and registered with the Election Commission in 2019.
Lallianchhunga said that Congress, being a national party, never thought of skipping Rajya Sabha’s polls although he was certain that the ruling party would win the elections.
