New Delhi:

The situation of COVID-19 in the country worsens with each passing day and does not improve, the Supreme Court said on Tuesday while extending the conditional release of a Punjab-based businessman accused in a racketeering case Drugs.

The observation of the superior court intervened at the hearing of a criminal case in which the accused Jagjit Singh Chahal asked for an extension of his parole ending next month.

A panel of judges RF Nariman, Navin Sinha and BR Gavai said that in a situation like this, there is no point in overcrowding prisons when some of the accused are either on bail or on parole.

“You see … the situation with COVID-19 is not getting better with each passing day. It is only getting worse in the country,” the bench told the Punjab government council, which opposed the ‘call.

The bench took cognizance of the affidavit from the Punjab government which stated that bail had been granted in the case on February 19 and that its appeal would be heard on July 16.

“Parole must continue until the appeal is heard and it is finally decided, provided that the applicant cooperates and requests no adjournment for any reason whatsoever when the appeal is heard. Special authorization request is resolved. Pending requests are being processed. “said the bench in its order.

Chahal, a prominent businessman, is also charged in a money laundering case in addition to being convicted of running a drug racket in the state.

Last month, the Supreme Court sent a notice to the government of Punjab on its request for a response.
