Chennai:

Free food would be delivered to homes for the elderly, sick and destitute in Chennai and surrounding areas where an intense foreclosure will be in effect until July 5, Chief Minister E Palaniswami said on Tuesday.

Amma’s canteens will continue to provide free food in the state capital and in parts of Chengelpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, he said.

After a hiatus, Amma Canteens resumed providing free food from June 19 when the lockdown – without several previously authorized relaxations – was triggered.

“I have ordered free delivery of food to the homes of the elderly, sick and destitute,” the chief minister said in an official statement, adding that the initiative would be in effect here and in neighboring regions until the end of the reinforced locking.

To implement this initiative, the authorities were urged to further strengthen community kitchens and to cook adequate food in these facilities to meet the requirements, he said.
