Chennai:

Tamil Nadu, the second worst state affected by a coronavirus in the country, crossed the mark of a lakh on Friday when 4 329 people tested positive for the highly infectious virus in one day. With an addition of 64, the state’s death toll stood at 1,385, according to government data.

There are 1,022,721 total cases in the state – including deaths – of which 58,378 people have been cured. As of Friday, 2,357 people were released from hospitals. The number of active Tamil Nadu cases stands at 42,955.

With a total of 64,689 positive cases and 23,581 active cases, Chennai represents 62.9% of the total in Tamil Nadu.

In Chennai, six urban clusters with cramped houses along narrow alleys – representing 26 lakh people – continue to add up the numbers of coronaviruses. In addition to using shared toilets at home or public toilets outside, 15% of residents here, say officials, defy COVID-19 standards.

The virus is now spreading to other districts as well as urban populations. 330 people tested positive today in the neighboring Chengalpattu district, bringing their toll to 6,139. In Madurai, 287 tested positive.

In a review of its strategy, the state has intensified its tests phenomenally. As of Friday, 35,028 people have been tested and 12,707,720 people have been tested so far across the state.

Hundreds of fever treatment clinics are also set up across the state to attract people with fever and other symptoms for coronavirus testing.

While Chennai and Madurai are completely locked out, bus services have been suspended in other districts.

The state government denies the spread of the community. Citing his recovery rate of 56.8% and his death rate of 1.3%, Dr Prabhdeep Kaur, a member of the Tamil Nadu medical expert team, said: “There is no need to panic because of the spike. Early detection is an opportunity to save lives. “

According to state government sources, the state is projected to hit the 2 lakh mark in August.

The DMK opposition accuses the government of convenience. The ruling AIADMK has also drawn criticism from the public for hastily opening the economy, then retracting and blindly following the chronology of its ally BJP.

In May, the state government appointed senior official Dr. J Radhakrishnan, known for his expertise in disaster management as secretary of health, to tackle the situation.

Tamil Nadu is expected to open shopping centers and industries in several regions outside of Chennai from June 6.
