Patient allegedly killed by Aligarh hospital staff for non-payment (representation)

Aligarh:

A 44-year-old man was reportedly beaten to death by staff at a private hospital in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, for “failing to pay 4,000 rupees,” his family said today.

Police said they received video surveillance footage of the alleged attack and registered an FIR.

The incident took place on Thursday when Sultan Khan was transported to the hospital on the Dhorra bypass road in the Kuwarsi region of Aligarh with severe abdominal pain, the family said.

Sultan Khan’s relative, Shaman Khan, said that the hospital advised them to do an ultrasound.

“At the time of admission, we inquired about the cost of the ultrasound. We were told it would be Rs 4,500. We could not afford it, so we decided not to admit our patient “he told the Press Trust news agency. from India.

In the meantime, the hospital has given Sultan Khan medicine, he said.

“As a result, we paid for the drugs but objected to a charge of 4,000 rupees which, according to the counter clerk, was an entry fee,” he said.

A copy of the bill shows that they were charged just above Rs 3,700 for the drugs.

“As the family left the hospital without having an ultrasound, some hospital staff attacked us with wooden sticks. Sultan received a blow to the head and died shortly after. “said Shaman Khan.

According to the PTI news agency, Superintendent of Police (Aligarh) Abhishek said that the family could not bear the costs indicated by the hospital, so they decided not to admit the patient.

“There was a dispute between the family and the hospital staff over certain payments. His families alleged that the patient died in the ensuing fight. The body was sent for an autopsy”, he said.

“Further action will be taken after the autopsy report is received,” he said.

Sultan Khan’s relative said they first took him to government-run JN Medical College, but was told that he could not be admitted until after a coronavirus test because a section of the facility is dedicated to COVID-19 patients.

But the family said they took him to the private hospital because his urine passage was blocked.

A hospital declaration is awaited.
