Amaravat:

A special judge responsible for trying POCSO violations on Tuesday handed down the death sentence to an accused in the case of the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl in the city of Vijayawada.

The crime happened in November last year in Gollapudi and the accused Barlapudi Pentaiah was arrested within 24 hours.

A case under various sections of the IPC and the POCSO Act has been registered against him.

The police nailed Pentaiah’s guilt with DNA analysis and filed the ticket. Although the trial ended in March, the delivery of judgment has been delayed due to the lockdown imposed by the coronavirus.

No fewer than 35 witnesses, including the accused’s wife, testified.

The 5th additional district and special judge charged with trying offenses under the POCSO law rendered the verdict on Tuesday and sentenced the defendants to death, according to a statement from the DGP office.

This is the 18th conviction police have obtained after launching new initiatives for the protection of women and children in the state since December 2019, according to the statement.
