New Delhi:

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said on Sunday that the COVID-19 death rate in the nation’s capital was less than 1% in the past 10 days and claimed that a massive increase in testing of coronavirus infection had led to an increase in cases.

He said Delhi registered 3,372 new cases on Saturday and 4,476 patients recovered within 24 hours.

About 46 deaths reported during the same period, which was the highest in almost 70 days, Jain said: “We don’t look at the numbers for a single day. The average death rate for the last 10 days was 0.94%.

“The patients who died are not the ones who tested positive in one day. They are the people who tested positive 15-20 days back. That is why we take the average of 10 days”, at- He underlines.

The overall case fatality rate is 1.94%. The bed occupancy rate in Delhi hospitals has declined over the past four to five days and 55% of total beds are currently unoccupied, the minister added.

The Delhi government had formed a three-member committee to audit deaths from the novel coronavirus in the nation’s capital on a daily basis.

Mr Jain said the commission visited all hospitals and the report was satisfactory.

“There have been a few issues that have been fixed. There was a time when the death rate was four percent but it has stayed below one percent for the past 10 days,” he said. .

In the nation’s capital, the number of containment zones has passed the 2,000 mark, which Jain says is part of Delhi’s strategy to tackle the spread of the virus.

“We have tripled the number of tests and those that tested positive have been isolated in small containment areas to contain the spread. We knew we had to do this aggressively for two to four weeks and are now seeing positive results as the cases go down, “he added.

Mr Jain was also asked about market areas such as Connaught Place, Lajpat Nagar and Laxmi Nagar emerging as COVID-19 hotspots.

“Everywhere where cases have been reported, there is now a slowdown. Over the past seven days, the cases and the positivity rate have declined. The positivity rate for the past seven days was 6.5%. Two weeks ago it was 8.5% and three weeks ago it was nine percent.

“Also, people don’t stay in market areas. They come there from residential areas. Markets cannot be called ‘coronavirus hotspots’, residential areas are hotspots,” he said.
