Calcutta:

Veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee’s health is gradually improving and the octogenarian speaks a few words, opens his eyes and responds to verbal commands, medics said on Sunday. The thespian’s oxygen saturation has been constant, its organs are functioning normally, and all other parameters are fine, they said. “Mr. Chatterjee is doing well and gradually improving, but we have a few ways to fully recover and get home. He does not have any lung problems related to the corona. We have reduced the need for oxygen as it still clings to its saturation which is over 96 percent to 99 percent, “said Dr Arindam Kar, leading the team of medics to treat the veteran actor from the medical establishment.

Sleepy Soumitra Chatterjee is their only concern at the moment, according to the doctor. “The only problem we face is his consciousness. He is currently sleepy but completely aroused. He responds to verbal commands. He tries to recognize people, the intention of speech but he only says a few words. We are also concerned about his age and the omorbidities he suffers from, ”said Dr Kar.

The daughter of veteran actors Poulomi Basu said: “Baba (father) is improving and his vital signs are fine but we are told that the doctors are working on his neurological side which needs to be improved.”

Soumitra Chatterjee is still forced to listen to the music of his choice and on Saturday evening he communicated with his daughter when she visited him in the hospital, the doctor said. The actor has not developed any new complications and does not have a fever, he added.

“We are reasonably sure that he will recover from this fatal disease and within the next four to five days he will be in a much better condition,” added the doctor. The critically-acclaimed actor, who has the rare distinction of having worked with maestros like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha and Tarun Mazumdar, was admitted to Kolkata hospital on October 6 after testing positive to COVID-19. He had to be transferred to ITU after his condition deteriorated. Soumitra Chatterjee tested negative for COVID-19 on Wednesday, after which he was transferred to a non-COVID ITU for treatment.
