New Delhi:
Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, a popular name in the Indian fashion circuit, who has designed wedding outfits for Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma, recently added her midas touch to school uniforms (wait for it). Yes, you read that right. From morning to Wednesday, the designer shared photos from his latest project, which can best be described as fashion for a cause. Girls posing happily in school uniforms designed by Sabyasachi, happen to be students at Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls’ School in Jaisalmer. The designer recently collaborated with a US-based nonprofit called CITTA and designed uniforms using Ajrakh, a block printing technique commonly used in the region (more on this later).
Take a look at the uniforms designed by Sabyasachi:
The 46-year-old designer, in another post, explained what went into making the uniforms. He wrote that the idea behind the design of the uniforms was to adopt local techniques, making the students who wear them feel at home. “When designing these outfits, I wanted to make sure they reflected the artisan heritage of the area, in the hope that it would showcase the beauty and power inherent in craftsmanship for young girls, while by providing a better sense of community, connection and pride in their home, ”read an excerpt from her statement.
Speaking of the techniques used, Sabyasachi added: “With this in mind, we have chosen to use Ajrakh – a traditional textile from the region. It is block printed with natural dyes using a technique that predates modern history.
The project, initiated by CITTA, aims to provide education to young girls in Jaisalmer and teach them vocational skills, expanding opportunities for economic independence for them.
Many Bollywood stars including Vidya Balan, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika padukone, among others swear by the outfits of Sabyasachi. The designer, who has also been the official wedding dressmaker for many Bollywood A-listers, is known to have used Indian crafts, local techniques in his designs.
