Moscow:

A Russian court sentenced former American sailor Paul Whelan to 16 years in a penal colony on Monday during a spy trial which he called “sham”.

The Moscow City Court found Whelan guilty of receiving classified information while standing in the accused’s cage in the courtroom with a sign that reads “Mock Trial!” and called on the President to intervene.
