Bombay:
Maharashtra’s Interior Minister Anil Deshmukh on Thursday welcomed the Centre’s decision to place OTT platforms under its tutelage, saying it was good for society.
The center has placed OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime video, and online news and current affairs content under the purview of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, giving it the power to regulate the policies and rules of the digital space.
In an official statement, Deshmukh stressed the need to ensure that children are not exposed to obscene content on the Internet.
“Digital platforms will fall under the competence of the central government and their regulation will be good for society,” said the minister.
He also called for the need to ensure that the integrity of women working in the entertainment industry is not compromised in any form of pressure.
The minister further stated that he was convinced that by regulating OTT platforms such bad practices could be reduced and social health maintained.
Mr Deshmukh also referred to recent action by Maharashtra’s cyber police against certain production houses and crew members for allegedly transmitting obscene and sexually explicit content over the internet.
