New Delhi:

India has invited the eight member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to a virtual summit of the bloc it hosts on November 30, the foreign ministry said Thursday.

For the first time, India is hosting the SCO Council of Heads of Government Summit.

India and Pakistan became permanent members of the SCO in 2017. The other SCO member countries are Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

“The host country of the SCO summit invites all SCO member states to attend the meeting. So we have informed the eight SCO member states, the four observer states, the SCO secretary general and the director of SCO RATS, ”spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs Anurag Srivastava said.

He was answering a question on the matter.

India announced earlier this month that it will host the SCO Council of Heads of Government summit in the virtual format and that it will be attended by the prime ministers of the bloc’s member countries.

The CSO summit of the Council of Heads of State is considered the main annual event. It was hosted by Russia on November 10 in virtual format.

Seen as a counterweight to NATO, the SCO has become one of the largest cross-regional international organizations. The aim of the SCO is to maintain peace, stability and security in the region.
