Lucknow:
The Malihabadi Dashehari mango having obtained the GI label more than a decade ago, the Central Institute of Subtropical Horticulture of the city has now launched the process of obtaining the label of geographical indication for the varieties of mango Gaurjit , Banarsi Langrha, Chausa and Rataul.
Once the varieties have obtained the GI label, the producers of these mangoes are likely to find a good price and farmers in other regions cannot market their fruits by misusing the name.
“After having contributed significantly to GI marking for Malihabadi Dashehari, the Central Institute of Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), in collaboration with the Mandi Parishad of Uttar Pradesh launched the process of obtaining GI marking for Gaurjit, Banarsi Langrha, Chausa and Rataul for Langrha and Chausa will help develop a good market for these special mangoes from Uttar Pradesh.
“It will also be possible to get a good price for the producers of these mangoes by obtaining a special geographic identity and other producers cannot market their fruit using the name incorrectly”, Shailendra Rajan, Director, ICAR- Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture, Lucknow said in a statement.
The Malihabadi Dashehari mango obtained the GI tag in September 2009.
Many Indian mangoes have GI labels. Alphonso de Ratnagiri, Kesar de Gir (Gujarat) and Marathwada, Bangnapalli in Andhra Pradesh, Zardalu de Bhagalpur, Appamidi de Karnataka, Himsagar de Malda (West Bengal), Laxman Bhog and Fazli, among others, have achieved this distinction, a-t -he declares.
Almost all mango producers in the geographical area selected for the GI benefit from this step.
“For specific climatic and geographic reasons, it is easy to produce good quality mangoes. The Dashehari produced in other states cannot be compared at all to the Dashehari of Malihabad due to the size, weight, sweetness and color of the fruits in the GI of the notified area. This is the reason why sellers in various overseas markets are trying to attract buyers on behalf of Malihabadi Dashehari, “said Mr. Rajan.
Geographical indications (GIs) are used for products that have a specific place of origin. The distinctive characteristics and reputation of these products are due to their origin in a region.
“The indicator guarantees the quality of the product and the origin of the production. The geographical indication label or the geographical indicator means that no person, institution or government can use the famous name of this product other than an authorized user.
“In India, the Geographical Indication (Registration and Protection) Act 1999 came into force in September 2003. So far, 370 products have been registered as” geographic “(GI) products under” Agriculture ” , “Crafts”, “Manufactured Products”, “Food Products” and “Natural Products”, “said Mr. Rajan.
Generally, after certification, farmers will face less competition when marketing.
“The GI label can also be considered a quality standard in many ways. There is still a need for awareness campaigns for GI products in India so that farmers can benefit from them. said the director of CISH.
