Unable to extract money from her mother to buy drugs, a man from Nadia district in West Bengal killed her to death and seriously injured her sister-in-law who tried to save her from the attack, police said on Friday.

After the incident on Thursday, on the eve of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, local people beat him up and threw him into a pond after he tied his hands and legs with ropes. The police took him to the hospital after rescuing him.

Sukumar Biswas, an unemployed drug addict living in Saha para in the Chakdaha police station area, asked his mother Nirmala for money and fought with everyone who opposed it.

He asked his 55-year-old mother for money on Thursday, but she refused.

After an altercation, Biswas attacked her with a “dao”, a sharp weapon. When his older brother’s wife Debika rushed to her rescue, he also beat her and ran away, police said.

The local population, however, caught him soon after and beat him up. They also threw him into a pond after tying his hands and legs with ropes. The police saved him from there.

The two injured women were taken to hospital where

Nirmala Biswas died from her injuries. Her daughter-in-law and Biswas were hospitalized, police said.

A resident of Saha Para said that Biswas was a nuisance that frequently caused problems for family members and neighbors.

He said that the accused had married twice but that his wives had left him.
