Monsoon news: heavy rain and water saturation at Patna in Bihar

Patna:

Heavy monsoon rains hit Bihar and waterlogging was reported in several parts of Patna, one day after lightning and thunderstorms killed many people in the state. There is also a red alert for heavy rain in the state today. The death toll from lightning and thunderstorms in Bihar has soared to 92, the State Department for Disaster Management announced today.

Gopalganj, in northern Bihar, said 13 people were dead and several others were injured due to lightning during the thunderstorm on Friday, administration official Upendra Pal confirmed, according to a report by the ANI news agency.

Heavy rain is also expected today in eight districts of Bihar. “Siwan, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj and Katihar will receive very heavy precipitation as well as thunderstorms and lightning,” said a department official.

The heavy rains in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh are due to a monsoon trough from Punjab to eastern Bihar through Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, said the IMD, adding that very heavy rain is likely in parts of eastern UP over the next three to four days. The red alert for heavy rain continues in the states of Assam, Sikkim, the Himalayan foothills of Bengal and the Meghalaya.

The monsoon covered the whole country today, two weeks earlier than expected, according to the IMD. The monsoon usually hits Kerala on June 1 and it takes about 45 days to reach Sriganganagar in western Rajasthan, its last outpost in the country.

In Odisha, the monsoon was active and the state received 26% more precipitation than normal at this time of the year.
